Skydiving Accident in Illertissen: Man Seriously Injured
A skydiving incident occurred in Illertissen, Neu-Ulm district, on Saturday afternoon, leaving a 38-year-old man from Friedberg near Augsburg seriously injured. The man was skydiving with four other jumpers, and the group was practicing freefall flight techniques at an altitude of 4,000 meters.
The man's main parachute failed during the skydive, forcing him to cut away his parachute at around 1,200 meters above the ground. In a fortunate turn of events, the reserve parachute of the man, who has made over 1,000 jumps, initially had problems but opened at 150 meters above the ground, saving his life.
The reserve parachute of another skydiver in the same group also failed to open at the initial stage of the jump in Illertissen, but it opened at the last second, likely preventing a more severe accident. No signs of foul play were found in the incident.
Following the crash, the injured skydiver was taken to a hospital by helicopter. The cause of the accident has not been publicly disclosed. It is worth noting that this incident occurred on the same day as a separate bungee jumping accident in Illertissen, but the cause of that accident remains undisclosed.
The police believe the reserve parachute opening at the last second likely saved the skydiver's life. This incident serves as a reminder of the inherent risks associated with extreme sports and the importance of safety precautions and equipment checks.
Our thoughts are with the injured skydiver and his family during this difficult time. We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as more information becomes available.
