Sky River Casino workers stage first public protest for union recognition

Around 100 workers from Sky River Casino near me took to the streets on Tuesday in a protest led by UNITE HERE Local 49. The demonstration marked the union's first public action in front of casino customers. The dispute centres on the casino's refusal to recognize Local 49 as the official representative for its employees.

The protest was not about wages but about formal recognition. Local 49 has long claimed that Sky River must honour a 2017 agreement to acknowledge the union. Aamir Deen, the union's president, led the demonstration and warned that further action would follow if the casino did not change its position.

Sky River's owner, Wilton Rancheria, has resisted recognizing Local 49 for years. The tribe argues that a secret ballot election among workers should take place before any recognition. Cammeron Hodson, president of the Wilton Rancheria Gaming Authority, repeated this demand during the dispute.

The conflict stretches back nearly a decade. Since 2017, Wilton Rancheria has opposed Local 49's certification, filing unfair labour practice charges in 2022 and launching a lawsuit in 2023 to challenge the union's status. The tribe maintains that it prefers direct relations with employees rather than union involvement.

Local 49 counters that a vote would only delay an already lengthy process. The union insists that Sky River should recognize it without further conditions.

The protest signals growing tension between workers and management. Sky River continues to reject Local 49's demands, while the union threatens more escalation. For now, the casino remains firm in its stance, leaving the dispute unresolved.
