Skating on the frozen canals of Augsburg
In the heart of Bavaria, the city of Augsburg offers a delightful winter activity for its residents and visitors alike - ice skating. Here's a rundown of the key details you need to know about ice skating in Augsburg.
Starting from September 16, 2025, the ice skating season will kick off at the Haunstetten ice rink. The city's regulatory authorities, including the Ordnungsdepartement, oversee the safety of these ice surfaces, and the permission to use them on private property is granted to the property owner or the entity responsible for the private area.
The Haunstetten ice rink can accommodate up to 220 skaters at a time. Skate rental is available from Zatsport on Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, and during school holidays. Prices vary depending on the size of the skate, with sizes 26 to 35 costing 3 €, sizes 36 to 47 priced at 5 €, and a pair costing 4.50 euros for ice aids and 3.50 euros.
Rink 2 of the Curt-Frenzel Stadium is another venue for public ice skating, set to open approximately on November 1, 2025, weather permitting. The stadium, with its rich history, is home to the Augsburg Panthers, who play in the DEL (Deutsche Eishockeynliga). Skate rental is offered by the Augsburg Panther Eishockey GmbH, available for sizes 25 to 48 and four-blade gliders for attachment to shoes.
Discounted rates are available for various groups, including children up to 18 years old, holders of honorary cards, severely disabled persons, students, volunteers, pensioners receiving basic security in old age, and recipients of ongoing HLU or unemployment benefit, reduced earning capacity.
It's important to note that the ordinance applies throughout the city for all public and private waters, excluding private waters located on a non-publicly accessible property. The presentation of a personal ID may be required.
Cash machines in the ice sports facilities accept both cash and card payments, operating daily from 7:00 to 22:00. Buying an entrance ticket a few days in advance or purchasing a ten-ticket card eliminates the need to queue at the cash machine.
For those bringing their own skates, four-blade gliders are available for attachment to shoes, although this information is without guarantee.
However, it's worth mentioning that as of October 1, 2024, it is prohibited to enter and use ice surfaces on waters within the city limits of Augsburg.
