Sixty individuals, including a minor, have fallen ill due to a salmonella outbreak at a restaurant in Casertano.
In the Caserta area of Italy, around 65 individuals, including a child under two years old, have fallen ill with salmonella poisoning, according to the Caserta Local Health Authority. The illnesses were reported after dining at a specific restaurant in San Marcellino.
The first signs of poisoning appeared within 24-48 hours after consumption, and the infected individuals are not in serious condition. A health investigation has been launched following the incidents, and sanctions were imposed on the restaurant. Food samples were taken, but the results are still pending.
The hygienic-sanitary situation at the restaurant was not found to be serious, but the exact strain of salmonella causing the outbreak was not specified. The infections occurred among people who had eaten at the restaurant on different days, and three other groups of customers dined there on subsequent days.
Others from the same group were admitted to hospitals in Caserta and Aversa. Twenty-five cases are from a group that dined on August 31st, and eight individuals from the same family were admitted to the Marcianise hospital on September 2nd.
The Caserta Local Health Authority's veterinary service ordered the closure of the restaurant, but the search results do not provide information on the host of the San Marcellino restaurant where the incidents occurred or when it was last open. One hypothesis is that the salmonella was transmitted by a healthy carrier.
The authorities are urging anyone who dined at the restaurant recently to seek medical attention if they experience any symptoms of salmonella poisoning. The public is advised to maintain good hygiene practices when handling and consuming food to prevent the spread of foodborne illnesses.
