Significant cost increase for Carola Bridge demolition indicated
In the heart of Dresden, Germany, the city council has made a significant decision regarding the Carolabridge. The old structure, built in the 1970s, suddenly collapsed over a length of approximately 100 meters in September 2024, with no vehicles or people on it at the time.
The demolition of the Carolabridge is set to commence in the second quarter of 2028, as announced by the city administration. The costs for this demolition have seen a significant increase from the initial estimate of 18 million euros. As it stands, the demolition of all three bridge spans is expected to cost approximately 27 million euros, with additional 5 million euros allocated for safety measures, traffic management, and the condition assessment of the bridge.
Grit Ernst, the project manager for the demolition, hails from the Streets and Sewers Department of the state capital. However, the name of the person responsible for the reconstruction management of the Carolabridge in Dresden remains undisclosed.
The new construction of the Carolabridge is scheduled to begin in 2028 and is expected to be completed by 2031. The city council has decided on a four-lane replacement for the bridge. The city administration provided these cost and timeline estimates in response to an inquiry from the Left faction in the city council.
It is worth noting that no one was injured during the collapse of the Carolabridge. The city council's decision to replace the bridge aims to ensure the safety and continuity of transportation in the city.
