Signal of grave concern for democracy and the nation

In a historic turn of events, Friedrich Merz, a conservative politician, fell short of the absolute majority by six votes in the first round of voting for Chancellor in the Bundestag. This unprecedented occurrence in post-war German history forced a second round of voting on the same day, where Merz eventually won but with a weakened political standing and diminished prestige.

This failure marked a humiliating start to his chancellorship, significantly undermining his authority and signaling internal divisions and weakened support within his coalition. Merz's government has since struggled with public disillusionment, low approval ratings (around 29–32%), coalition infighting, and unfulfilled campaign promises, contributing to a perception of instability and ineffectiveness.

After failing in the first round, the Bundestag votes again immediately; a simple majority in this second round is sufficient to elect the chancellor. Merz won in the second ballot but entered office with a fragile majority and a coalition government described as dysfunctional.

Going forward, Merz faces the challenge of stabilizing his government, regaining public trust, pushing through policy reforms, and addressing rising support for the right-populist AfD, which his government has so far failed to contain. If the second vote had also failed, the Bundestag would have 14 days to elect a chancellor. If no candidate achieves a majority after that, the Federal President may dissolve parliament and call new elections.

A CDU politician must have a conservative profile to position the party against a right-wing populist AfD. Merz must give a home to the 30 to 40 percent conservative voters. A stalemate, new elections, or a political vacuum is unaffordable for everyone. Some Union MPs may have been disappointed not to have been considered in the government formation. His vote on migration in the Bundestag with the AfD, and his dictum of "green and left-wing spin doctors," have not been forgotten by some.

The country needs a functional government to combat the crisis mood with momentum, optimism, and reforms. All coalition MPs in Berlin are appealed to, to be aware of their responsibility, as it's about the country, not party politics.
