Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean, is transforming its tourism landscape. The Borghi dei Tesori network, established in 2021, is spearheading this change, uniting around 70 municipalities from all provinces of Sicily. This network offers cultural tours, culinary experiences, and insights into local craftsmanship.

The shift towards a model that emphasizes culture, history, and the everyday life of villages is evident. Montalbano Elicona, a winner in 2015, has seen an annual increase of five percent in visitor numbers. Similarly, Buccheri, previously without a main title, was named "best culinary destination" in 2021 and has since witnessed a 20 percent growth.

The success of these villages is not limited to the main season. Overnight stays in B&Bs, inns, and private accommodations in the Val di Noto increased by 10% in 2024, indicating a year-round growth in village tourism. The village of Militello Val di Catania, a winner in 2024, has also experienced an increase in visitor numbers, especially on spring weekends.

Petralia Soprana, another participant in the network, had around 40,000 overnight stays in 2023. The growth in tourist numbers is noteworthy, and a projected 15% increase in overnight stays is expected between 2022 and 2025 in Sicily.

Regional funding programs in Sicily are supporting the creation of small, resilient economic cycles. One of the sustainable concepts being focused on is the 'albergo diffuso' model for accommodation. This model disperses accommodations throughout the village, promoting a more integrated and less intrusive approach to tourism.

The leading figures of the Borghi dei Tesori network in Sicily include local cultural managers and tourism experts who coordinate efforts to promote sustainable tourism. They aim to preserve the historical and cultural heritage of small Sicilian villages, thereby boosting local economies and enhancing community identity.

Demand for authentic experiences and visitor management that preserves historical substance and quality of life is high. The Borghi dei Tesori network is a testament to Sicily's commitment to sustainable tourism, providing visitors with unique experiences while respecting and preserving the island's rich cultural heritage.
