Siblings from Scotland break global record by rowing 9,000 miles across the Pacific Ocean
In an incredible feat of endurance and determination, the Maclean brothers - Ewan, Jamie, and Lachlan - have set a new world record for rowing across the Pacific Ocean unsupported. The trio, who hail from the UK, completed their 9,000-mile voyage from Peru to Australia in just 139 days, 5 hours, and 52 minutes.
The brothers, accompanied by their custom-built carbon fibre boat named Rose Emily, honoured their lost sister, embarked on their epic journey on 12 April from Lima, Peru. Upon arrival in Cairns, Australia, nearly five months later on Saturday, they were greeted by more than 50 friends, family members, and fans.
The Maclean brothers' Pacific row has raised over £800,000 for clean water projects in Madagascar through their Maclean Foundation. Notable figures such as actors Ewan McGregor, Mark Wahlberg, and Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea have backed their campaign.
Their journey was not without challenges. The brothers faced injuries, extreme weather conditions, and a quick depleting supply of food. Ewan Maclean, at 33 years old, and Jamie suffered crippling seasickness for the first two weeks of the journey. Lachlan Maclean, the youngest brother, was even thrown overboard during a nightshift but was pulled back on the boat by Ewan.
Despite these hardships, the brothers spent up to 14 hours a day rowing, developing a newfound appreciation for simple things like showers, lying in bed, and stationary objects after their ocean rowing experience.
The previous record for the unaccompanied Pacific Ocean crossing was set by the Russian Fedor Konyukhov in 2014, who took just over 159 days to row about 11,898 kilometers from Chile to Australia. The Maclean brothers broke this record by crossing nearly 14,000 kilometers in 139 days.
Before their Pacific Ocean adventure, the Maclean brothers had already conquered the Atlantic, setting three world records during their journey. The Maclean Foundation was launched with their father, Charles Maclean, following their 2020 record-breaking journey. Lachlan Maclean mentioned that although they have completed the row, their charity target is still £1 million.
As for the brothers' post-row cravings, Jamie Maclean, at 31 years old, expressed his desire for a pizza after the journey.
