"Sheinbaum offers optimistic assessment in her initial government report: 'Things are looking good and will get even better.'"
In her first year in office, President Claudia Sheinbaum has made significant strides in various sectors, as evidenced by her recent annual government report. The report highlighted achievements in security, economy, and healthcare, among other areas.
One of the most notable achievements has been the reduction in the murder rate. During the first 11 months of Sheinbaum's tenure, homicides have decreased by 25%, marking a significant improvement in the country's security situation. This reduction was achieved in both Mexico City and the State of Mexico.
Economically, Mexico has seen a reduction in poverty levels. More than 13 million Mexicans exited poverty between 2018 and 2024, a period that coincides with the presidency of Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO). The Mexican peso remains below 19 to the US dollar, and the unemployment rate is one of the lowest in the world at 2.7%. Foreign direct investment hit a record high in the first half of 2025, and tax collection increased by 8.5% annually in the first eight months of the year.
Sheinbaum's government has also focused on welfare programs. Three new programs have been created, including one that provides pension payments to women aged 60-64. As a result, 32 million families across Mexico now benefit from these government initiatives.
However, Sheinbaum acknowledged that reducing violence in Mexico remains one of her greatest challenges. Homicides reached an all-time high during AMLO's six-year term. To address this issue, Sheinbaum's security cabinet meets daily at 6 a.m. to "assess and strengthen" the new security strategy.
In terms of infrastructure, work has begun on five of 15 proposed economic development hubs, and the construction of 18 of the 100 proposed new industrial parks is underway. The president outlined a range of "strategic projects" including the production of a Mexican electric vehicle (Olinia) and the "design and production" of a "cutting-edge" unmanned aerial vehicle (Quetzal).
Sheinbaum has also been proactive in building relationships with international partners. She asserted that she has managed to build a relationship of mutual respect with the United States government, and she rejected an offer from Trump to send the U.S. army into Mexico to combat the nation's drug cartels. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will visit Mexico on Wednesday.
Governing for women and improving their lives is a priority for Sheinbaum's administration. Sheinbaum highlighted this in her report and gave a nod to her predecessor and political mentor, AMLO. Sheinbaum nears the completion of her first year in office with an approval rating above 70%.
Inflation remains relatively stable, with an annual rate of 3.5% in July. The minimum wage increased 12% at the start of 2025. The Mexican Supreme Court also took the bench during Sheinbaum's term.
Sheinbaum has spoken to her U.S. counterpart on various occasions over the past seven months but has not yet met him in person. Mexico's GDP expanded 0.6% quarter-over-quarter in Q2.
In conclusion, Sheinbaum's first year in office has been marked by significant achievements in various sectors, including security, economy, and welfare. However, challenges such as reducing violence and ensuring continued economic growth remain. Sheinbaum's administration continues to work diligently to address these issues and build a fairer, safer, healthier, and more prosperous nation for all Mexicans.
