Sheila Miyoshi Jager is the individual in question, a person whose name carries significance.
Professor Sheila Miyoshi Jager, a distinguished academic, holds multiple prominent roles in the field of East Asian Studies. She is the Director of the Association for Asian Studies, the Director of the Russian, Eastern European & Eurasian (REEES) Program at Oberlin, and the Director of the East Asian Studies Program (EAS) at the same institution.
As a professor of East Asian Studies, Professor Jager has made significant contributions to our understanding of the region's history. Her latest book, The Other Great Game: The Opening of Korea and the Birth of Modern East Asia, published in 2023 by Belknap Press of Harvard University Press, traces Korea's pivotal role in East Asia's transformation from a Sino-centric Confucian order to a Japan-centric order of modern nation-states at the end of the 19th and early 20th centuries. This work earned her the prestigious 2024 Robert L. Jervis and Paul W. Schroeder Best Book Award from the International History and Politics Section of the American Political Science Association and the 2024 Duke of Wellington Medal for Military History from Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) in the UK.
In her new book project, The Long Great War and East Asia, 1910-1928, Professor Jager delves into the experiences of China, Japan, and Korea during World War One. This book tells a compelling story of how the war exacerbated the political divisions within these countries and led to future conflict.
Professor Jager's teaching and research interests are closely linked. Her courses at Oberlin include "Cold War in Asia," "Korea & East Asia: From Ancient Times to the Present," "The Korean War," "The Opening of Korea, 1860-1910," and "The Long Great War in East Asia." She is also co-authoring a book with Jiyul Kim entitled The Korean War: A Local History, under contract with Cambridge University Press.
In addition to The Other Great Game and her forthcoming The Long Great War and East Asia, Professor Jager is the author and editor of four other books on Korea and East Asia. Her scholarly work continues to enrich our understanding of this vital region's history and its impact on global politics.
