Shazam surpasses 100 billion music identifications
In the year 2002, Shazam made its debut as an SMS service in the UK, revolutionising the way music fans discovered their favourite tunes. With a simple dial, a phone held up to identify music, and a text message revealing the song name and artist, Shazam quickly became a staple in the music industry.
Fast forward to 2008, and the introduction of the iOS app brought Shazam's music recognition technology to millions more. This marked a new era for the service, propelling it into the heart of the tech world and setting the stage for a multitude of innovations.
In 2018, Shazam joined the Apple family, further enhancing its capabilities and ushering in a new chapter. With this partnership, Shazam's services were integrated into the Action button, making music recognition easier than ever. Users could now simply press-and-hold on recent iPhone and Apple Watch models to identify music around them or within apps.
The latest Wear OS update extended this convenience to Android users, enabling song identification directly from a user's watch. Additionally, the watchOS update added Shazam as a widget to the Smart Stack, proactively suggesting music recognition.
Over the years, Shazam has connected over 300 million monthly active users with the artists they love. This equates to 12 songs identified for every person on Earth, a testament to its popularity and the appetite for new music among users.
In April 2019, Asher Dov Angel took on the role of Shazam in the DC film "Shazam!", adding another layer to the brand's cultural significance.
One of the most notable milestones for Shazam came in the summer of 2011, when it had already recognised over 1 billion songs. More recently, during this summer's games in Paris, Kavinsky's "Nightcall" became the most identified song in one minute, further demonstrating the service's enduring appeal.
Shazam's top song ever, "Dance Monkey," has been identified over 45 million times, reflecting the popularity of the song and the service. Today, Shazam's Top 100 Songs of All Time can be listened to on Apple Music, providing a musical journey through the decades.
As Shazam surpasses over 100 billion song recognitions since its launch, it continues to shape the way we discover and enjoy music. With its seamless integration into daily life, Shazam remains an essential tool for music enthusiasts around the world.
