Severe rainfall in Mumbai leaves city immobilized, six individuals presumed dead

In the heart of India, Mumbai, the bustling financial hub, was brought to a standstill on Tuesday as torrential monsoon rains hit the city. This was the fifth consecutive day of downpours in Mumbai, with more than 200 millimeters of rain falling in parts of the city.

The heavy rains caused significant disruptions to Mumbai's suburban rail network, leaving commuters stranded and seeking alternative means of transportation. In the Kurla area, commuters were seen climbing onto bus roofs to escape waist-deep water.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert of very heavy rain for Mumbai on Wednesday, warning of more rainfall. The IMD also reported that Matheran, about 80 kilometers outside of Mumbai, received a staggering 382.5 mm of rain.

Unfortunately, the heavy rains have come at a tragic cost. Six people have died due to the rains, as reported by news channel NDTV.

Elsewhere in northwest India, cities including Delhi, south Haryana, and north Rajasthan received the highest rainfall amounts during the monsoon season. Delhi alone has logged around 963.4 mm of rainfall this year and is expected to cross 1,000 mm in September. The region experienced intense and above-normal rainfall, contributing to flash floods and landslides, particularly in Uttarakhand and surrounding areas.

Flight operations to and from Mumbai were also affected by delays due to the heavy rains. People were forced to wade through flooded streets in Mumbai as various areas around the city were inundated.

On a more positive note, at least 782 passengers were rescued after two overcrowded Monorail trains stalled due to power and air-conditioning failure.

As Mumbai and other parts of India continue to battle the heavy rains, the IMD and local authorities are urging residents to stay safe and heed all weather warnings.
