In the heart of Hürth, a tragic incident unfolded on June 4, 2025, at the intersection of Theresienhohe and Frechener Straße. A traffic accident involving a group of students from a local elementary school and their escort left seven people injured.

According to the police, the accident took place around 12:15 PM when a 20-year-old driver, known for previous traffic violations, was driving a BMW. After a part of the student group had crossed the road of Frechener Straße at the pedestrian crossing, the second group waited for the next green phase. However, investigations suggest that the driver may have run a red light.

The accident occurred as the driver entered the road of Frechener Straße on a green light, with the BMW approaching from the left on Sudetenstraße. The impact was severe, resulting in injuries to seven individuals, including a 25-year-old escort and a 10-year-old student who were severely injured. Four other children and one witness, aged 6 and 67 respectively, were lightly injured.

The driver, who left the scene on foot towards Theresiastraße immediately after the accident but returned shortly afterwards, has been identified and is currently under investigation. He was legally sentenced to a juvenile probation sentence partly for failure to provide assistance in road traffic in April 2025, and investigations are ongoing against him for negligent homicide in two cases, negligent bodily harm in five cases, and other traffic offenses.

Police have cordoned off the accident site and are questioning witnesses and the driver. Officers have seized the BMW, the mobile phone, and driver's license of the 20-year-old. A doctor took a blood sample from the driver for further evaluation.

The content of this report is originally from the Polizei Rhein-Erft-Kreis, transmitted via news aktuell. The investigation continues, and the evaluation of the documented traces is ongoing.

Expert support from the police victim support is being provided to the students and staff of the affected elementary school. The lightly injured were either treated on the spot or had already left the hospital.
