Seoul's New Centre Pompidou Hanwha Opens with a Dazzling Cubist Exhibition

Seoul is set to welcome its first international branch of France's renowned Centre Pompidou. The new museum, named Centre Pompidou Hanwha, will open its doors on June 4, 2023, in the remodeled annex of the 63 Building in Yeouido. This marks a major cultural moment for Korea, bringing world-class modern art to the heart of the city. The museum's design stands out with its 'box of light' concept and a striking semi-transparent double-glass facade. Inside, two spacious exhibition halls—each covering around 1,653 square meters—will host rotating displays from the Centre Pompidou's vast collection.

The inaugural exhibition, *Cubists: Pioneers of Vision*, will showcase masterpieces by Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, and Fernand Léger. Alongside this, a special *Korea Focus* section will explore how early Korean modern artists were influenced by Paris. The exhibition is jointly curated by Korean and French experts, reflecting a blend of local and international perspectives. Over the next four years, the museum plans to present two major exhibitions annually. Future shows will feature works by Marc Chagall, Wassily Kandinsky, and Henri Matisse, alongside movements like Fauvism, Surrealism, and abstract art. A dedicated section will also highlight female artists, adding depth to the programme. Laurent Le Bon, president of Centre Pompidou, called the opening a significant milestone. The project is made possible through a partnership with the Hanwha Foundation, ensuring long-term cultural exchange between France and Korea.

Centre Pompidou Hanwha will operate in Seoul's Yeouido district until at least 2027. The museum's arrival introduces a new hub for modern art in Korea, offering both iconic European works and fresh local perspectives. With its bold design and ambitious exhibition schedule, it aims to attract art lovers from across the region.
