Senate approves plan for an educational campus accommodating 10,000 residents in Schumacher Quarter
New City Quarter in Berlin-Reinickendorf Takes Shape: Schumacher Quarter
The Schumacher Quarter, a new city quarter being built on the former Tegel Airport in Berlin-Reinickendorf, is gradually taking shape. According to Berlin Senator Christian Gaebler, construction measures are set to begin from 2026.
The Schumacher Quarter will be a vibrant and integrated community, combining living, working, leisure, relaxation, local supply, and education. A new main traffic road is planned to connect the Schumacher Quarter to the Meteorstraße, ensuring smooth transportation within the area.
Planning rights have been granted for the first five residential fields in the south of the Schumacher Quarter, containing over 800 apartments. Among these, GESOBAU plans to build 330 state-owned rental apartments. Additional kindergartens will be built in the individual residential blocks, and the Schumacher Quarter will include a primary school with after-school care, an integrated secondary school, a kindergarten, a youth recreational facility, and sports facilities.
The educational campus in the Schumacher Quarter, occupying approximately 3.4 hectares, will unite schools, kindergartens, and recreational facilities. The Senate has created planning rights for this campus, with institutions such as the Max Delbrück Center, Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin (pediatric clinics), Deutsches Rheumaforschungszentrum, Gläsernes Labor, and Deutsches Zentrum für Kinder- und Jugendgesundheit (DZKJ) involved in its establishment.
The Schumacher Quarter will also feature a public park and areas for development as part of the green space concept and low-car mobility approach. A large landscape park is also planned on the former airport grounds.
Alongside the Schumacher Quarter, an Urban Tech Republic research and industrial park will be developed. This will further enhance the area's potential for innovation and growth.
Tenders for the construction work have started, with the first groundbreaking scheduled for late summer 2026. As the Schumacher Quarter continues to take shape, it promises to become a dynamic and sustainable new addition to Berlin's cityscape.
