Semiannual account of road crash incidents progression

In the first half of 2025, traffic safety concerns in Baden-Württemberg have come to the forefront, with a significant increase in offenses related to drug use in traffic and speeding.

According to the police, a total of 5,763 offenses related to drug use in traffic were reported, marking a 15.8% increase from the previous year. Meanwhile, the percentage of traffic fatalities due to excessive or inappropriate speed stands at 36%, with the number of traffic fatalities increasing by 17.5% compared to the previous year, totaling 188.

Interior Minister Thomas Strobl has emphasized the importance of traffic safety, stating that speeding is not a minor offense and that the police will continue to carry out regular speed checks using the latest traffic monitoring technology. Minister Strobl also highlighted the need for tailored prevention measures for young people regarding e-scooter safety, including the campaign #RIDEITRIGHT - e-scootering, but right!, and the importance of avoiding alcohol and drugs while using e-scooters.

The total number of speeding offenses recorded by the police in Baden-Württemberg in the first half of 2025 is 818,100, an increase of 6.6% compared to the first half of 2024. This increase in speeding offenses may be contributing to the rise in traffic fatalities due to excessive or inappropriate speed.

Another area of concern is the growing number of e-scooter accidents. In the first half of 2025, the number of traffic accidents involving e-scooters has significantly increased by 44.3%, totaling 841. Young people aged 14 to 24 account for nearly a third (30.6%) of the seriously injured, over half (47.6%) of the lightly injured, and half (50.0%) of the fatalities in e-scooter accidents. Of the 22 fatalities involving e-bike riders in Baden-Württemberg, 16 (72.7%) were senior citizens.

The police detected 402 offenses related to drunk driving and 346 offenses related to drug use in traffic during the ROADPOL coordinated week of action against alcohol and drugs in traffic from June 16 to 22, 2025. While the number of accidents involving drivers under the influence of alcohol has decreased to 1,810 in the first half of 2025, a decrease of 9.4%, the number of traffic accidents involving drivers under the influence of drugs has increased by 29.7% in the first half of 2025 compared to the same period last year.

The number of people slightly injured in traffic accidents in Baden-Württemberg in the first half of 2025 has increased by 3.7%, totaling 17,329. The number of people seriously injured in traffic accidents in Baden-Württemberg in the first half of 2025 has decreased by 3.8%, totaling 2,699.

While the number of traffic accidents in Baden-Württemberg in the first half of 2025 has slightly decreased compared to the previous year, totaling 150,957, the increase in offenses related to drug use in traffic, speeding, and e-scooter accidents is a cause for concern. The police and the government continue to work towards improving traffic safety in Baden-Württemberg, with a focus on education, enforcement, and prevention measures.
