Seized by the Münster customs office: 102 fake ultrasonic hair transplant devices shipped from China

In September 2024, customs officers at Muenster-Osnabrück Airport made an unexpected discovery during an inspection. They uncovered a consignment of fake ultrasound scalpels, a product with protected design rights.

The shipment, valued at over 10,000 euros, was intended to bring in 102 China-made ultrasound scalpels from the Minden-Lübbecke region. The European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) had registered the ultrasound scalpel and its design with a company based in Switzerland, Bexson Biomedical AG, which is the rights holder.

Customs officers received a tip from the customs criminal office regarding a targeted inspection. Nicole Thomsen, spokesperson for the Muenster Customs Office, stated that cases like this, involving such a large quantity of counterfeit products, are not common at the airport.

Ultrasound scalpels are instruments used in surgical procedures, allowing for gentle, low-bleeding incisions of tissue. However, counterfeit ultrasound scalpels may not meet set standards for product safety, especially for medical devices.

Risks to the patient include poor functionality, lack of sterility, or other safety issues. Non-compliance with safety standards can pose a risk to the patient. The held shipment will be destroyed in the course of the proceedings.

The rights holder was informed and confirmed the design rights infringement. Nicole Thomsen, spokesperson for the Muenster Customs Office, is available for further questions.
