German Basketball Team Faces Challenges Ahead of Euro Championship

The German basketball team is gearing up for the Euro Championship, but critical issues under the basket have arisen due to injuries and illnesses. Moritz Wagner and Isaiah Hartenstein will be missing from the tournament, leaving a void that needs to be filled.

One player expected to step up is Orlando Magic's Tristan da Silva, who is expected to play a bigger role this summer. However, the defensive anchor for the team is Daniel Theis, currently playing for AS Monaco.

Theis, who is 33 years old and has a history of injuries, has been sidelined due to knee problems, both at AS Monaco and with the national team. He missed two games against Slovenia and one against Serbia in preparation for the Euro Championship.

Despite these setbacks, former national player Per Günther believes Daniel Theis is indispensable for the German team. Theis' upcoming games against Spain will serve as a sporting yardstick and a stress test for his body.

If Theis is not fit, the medal chances for the German team will significantly drop. This could be Theis' last big hurrah in the national team, as there's no major tournament in 2026 and he'll be 35 at the World Cup in Qatar in 2027.

Captain Dennis Schröder, who plays in the NBA, has expressed his desire for Theis and him to play together in the future. Theis left the NBA earlier in 2025 and signed with AS Monaco in February 2025. Schröder and Theis have known each other since Schröder was 15 years old, and they are considered one of the best duos in Germany over the past ten years.

The next generation of German basketball players, led by NBA youngsters Ariel Hukporti and Tristan da Silva, is ready to step up. Head coach Alex Mumbru has been managing a squad with numerous injuries and ailments for weeks, and the young players will have a chance to prove their worth in the Euro Championship.

Despite the challenges, the German team is determined to make a strong showing in the Euro Championship. Theis' fitness and physicality will be closely watched as the team looks to overcome their adversities and compete at the highest level.
