Valencian Schools Face Delays Ahead of New School Year

As the Valencian Community prepares to start the new school year in five days, several schools, including the Lluís Vives school in Massanassa, are experiencing delays due to construction issues.

The Minister of Education, José Antonio Rovira, has stated that classes are expected to begin on September 8, but there are uncertainties about the start of the school year at the Lluís Vives school in Massanassa. The delays are attributed to a delay in the supply of the last materials for the closure of the fourth block.

The Sindicat de Treballadors i Treballadores de l'Ensenyament del País Valencià (STEPV) has expressed concern over the situation, stating that teachers find themselves in a situation of total abandonment, as they do not have a suitable space to prepare for the new school year. The parents' association of the Lluís Vives school in Massanassa claim that the delays in the works have been systematic since April.

The perimeter fence of both schools in Massanassa is missing, and the playground is still dirty with construction debris. The Ausiàs March and Lluís Vives schools in Massanassa are still under construction, with insulation, windows, doors, and various construction elements missing.

In addition, the CEIP L'Orba del Parque Alcosa in Alfafar and the IES Berenguer Dalmau in Catarroja are still awaiting demolition and reconstruction. The IES Berenguer Dalmau in Catarroja has been relocated to a small plot in two floors of containers, and some defects still need to be fixed, such as installing the air renewal system in the classrooms and providing computers, internet, and Wi-Fi.

The Minister of Education has mentioned that all works at the Lluís Vives school are being finished, but there is a possibility of a delay of one or two days in the start of the school year. In case the deadline is not met, there will be a delay of a couple of days. The Minister for Education in the Valencian Community responsible for addressing the problems of the affected schools after the incident on October 29 is Diana Morant.

The Minister of Education is confident that problems arising from the delay in supplies will be addressed this week. However, many people doubt that classes can begin before the end of the month or even in October due to the delays in the construction.

The City Council of Massanassa has offered alternative spaces for classes for the first few days, but the Minister of Education suggested that it is not necessary to furnish other spaces as the delay is minimal. Following visits to several schools, STEPV found that the alternative spaces provided were not suitable for the needs of the teachers and students.

In a reassuring message about the situation of schools affected by the tragedy of October 29, the Minister of Education, José Antonio Rovira, stated that all works are being finished, and the schools will be ready for the new school year. However, the collective of STEPV denounces that ten months after the disaster, both the Ministry of Education and the Government of Carlos Mazón are late in addressing the issues in schools.

In a few locations affected by the disaster area, there are two or three problems being addressed with prefabricated classrooms. The Minister of Education has stated that classes are expected to begin on September 8, and he is confident that the problems arising from the delay in supplies will be addressed this week.
