"School Trip Speed Monitoring System" or "Safe Journey Speed Control for Educational Excursions"
In the picturesque city of Bamberg, third-graders from Wunderburgschule, Rupprechtschule, and Martinschule are making a difference in traffic safety. The project, aptly named "On the brakes, ready, go!", is a joint initiative by the gGKVS (non-profit organization for crime prevention and traffic safety) and the gGwH (Society for value-oriented action).
The project aims to educate children about the importance of traffic safety, a crucial lesson that is best learned when it's fun. Petra Wilutzky, the project manager of the gGKVS, oversees the implementation at the schools.
Children under ten are particularly at risk on the road because they cannot yet independently estimate speeds and braking distances. To help them understand this, movement games and braking tests with roller skates were conducted under guidance in the gym. The roller skates exercise helped third-graders learn that slow and careful driving is crucial for braking in time.
The project has been proven effective and is implemented nationwide. In Bamberg, it has been successfully implemented at several primary schools in previous years. This year, the project has taken a step further, including an actual measuring vehicle to determine driving speeds in front of schools.
The students learned about adaptive speed in traffic as a means to save lives. They stood safely on the sidewalk and gave feedback to drivers, with a green thumb up for speeds of 30 km/h and a red card for driving too fast. This direct confrontation with drivers was a powerful learning experience.
All children received a reflective "Tempo-Checker" star as a reward for their participation in the project. This small star serves as a reminder of the traffic safety experience even on their school route.
Sandra SchΓΆbel, the project manager of the traffic safety campaign "Bremst, fertig, geht!" organized by gGKVS and gGwH in Bamberg, commends the initiative. She believes that educating children about traffic safety is of utmost importance and that this project is a fun and effective way to do so.
With these third-graders promoting road safety, Bamberg is one step closer to ensuring a safer environment for its youngest citizens.
