School shooting survivor found with bullet remnant in neck, gained viral fame for claiming friend acted as shield
In a shocking incident, a 10-year-old boy named Weston Halsne found himself in the midst of a shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis. The gunfire erupted just before 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday.
Weston was seated near the stained glass windows at the time of the shooting. As he heard the first gunshot, he thought, "What is that?" Little did he know that his life was about to take an unexpected turn.
Weston had practiced what to do during an active shooter situation, but not at the church. When the gunfire continued, he ran under the pew for cover. Unfortunately, his friend, Victor, was shot while shielding him during the chaos.
The suspect, identified as Robin Westman, aged 23, fired a rifle through the side windows of the church. Westman was dressed in black "tactical" gear and used three different guns, leaving approximately 120 shell casings.
The shooting resulted in the death of two children and injuries to others, including Weston. Doctors later discovered a bullet fragment in Weston's neck. If the bullet fragment had gone further, Weston would have died. However, it came close to his carotid artery, a miracle that the doctor described.
The surgery to remove the bullet fragment is scheduled to be sometime early this week. The surgery is low risk, and Weston is expected to make a full recovery. Weston has been left scared and not wanting to be alone following the shooting.
The investigation into the shooting is ongoing. The Minneapolis police have revised the number of injured individuals from 18 to 21, including three injured children. It is not immediately clear whether Weston is included in the revised total of injured individuals.
The suspect was found dead at the rear of the church with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Weston and all those affected by this tragic event.
