Scattering of Sand Mandala by Tibetan Monks at the Japanese Palace

The Ethnographic Museum Dresden is set to host a unique event, as the Buddhist Centre Samten Shenpen e.V. and Tibetan monks from the Serame University in South India create a sand mandala over five days, from August 19 to 24. This extraordinary spectacle will take place at the encounter space of the exhibition "Dialog among Guests - The Damascus Room in Dresden Invites" at the Japanese Palace.

Each day, the monks will meticulously create the mandala using millions of finest sand grains, dyed with natural colours. The mandala, a so-called mandala palace, will depict various Buddhas or entire assemblies of Buddhas, each scattered detail and the shapes and colours holding symbolic meaning.

The monks' prayers and recitations will accompany the creation of the mandala, providing a serene and spiritual atmosphere. The Geshe monks giving lectures during the construction are highly trained Tibetan Buddhist scholars and monks specialized in Buddhist philosophy. Short lectures will be part of the accompanying program, offering visitors insights into the symbolism and significance of the mandala.

Guided meditations will also be included in the program, providing visitors an opportunity to reflect and connect with the spiritual essence of the mandala. On Sunday, August 24, 2025, at 11:30 AM, the ritual dismantling of the mandala will take place. This marks the conclusion of the event, after which the remaining sand will be swept up and distributed in small bags to the audience.

Following the dismantling, any remaining sand will be taken together to the Elbe and scattered. A praise song with Buddhist thoughts on love, compassion, joy, and equanimity will be sung during this poignant moment. This event promises to be a captivating experience, offering visitors a glimpse into the rich and spiritual world of Tibetan Buddhism. Don't miss out on this extraordinary event!
