Saxony’s public squares transform into vibrant community hubs with eco-friendly upgrades

Public squares across Saxony are undergoing a major transformation. These spaces now serve as social meeting points, cultural landmarks, and green buffers against climate change. Cities and towns are investing in durable, low-maintenance furniture and flexible designs to make them more functional and inviting. The revitalisation effort spans both large cities and smaller municipalities. In Weißwasser, Jahnpark and Naturbad Jahnteich have received upgrades for better connectivity and ecological improvements. Hartenstein’s Parkanlage Am Fischerberg and Oederan’s Schlosspark Börnichen are also being modernised, with projects running from 2023 to 2027. These upgrades are partly funded by the European Regional Development Fund (EFRE), covering up to 75% of costs for district-affiliated towns and 70% for independent cities with at least 5,000 residents. The upgrades are already showing results. Well-designed squares encourage more foot traffic, strengthen local identity, and improve neighbourhood communication. With ongoing projects and funding support, Saxony’s public spaces are becoming more functional, sustainable, and community-focused.
