Saudi Arabia Issues Warning to TonyBet Regarding Illegal Betting Operations

The Dutch gambling regulator, the Kansspelautoriteit (KSA), has issued a warning to licensed operator TonyBet for offering prohibited betting products. The warning comes after TonyBet offered wagering markets on the Ballon d'Or and the Ballon d'Or awarded at the FIFA Club World Cup, which do not meet the requirements for legal sports betting in the Netherlands.

These awards, which are based on a vote or jury decision, are not considered objective, verifiable performance within official sporting events organized by recognized national or international sports organizations, as required by Dutch law. As such, any wager that does not correspond to these guidelines is considered a violation of the law.

Despite no actual wagers being placed on the prohibited markets, TonyBet has acknowledged the mistake and promised to be more vigilant in the future. The KSA's warning remains in effect, emphasizing the importance of careful offerings, even when provided by third-party companies.

In an effort to strengthen its advisory board, the KSA has made two key appointments: Marjolein Hoogland and Ingmar Franken, who will serve for an initial term of 3 years. These new members are expected to provide the KSA with advice and a second opinion on various matters, helping to ensure compliance with the regulatory framework in the Netherlands.

It's worth noting that the KSA has recently expressed concern over the Dutch tax hike, stating that it has failed to increase gambling revenue (GGR) and taxes. The decline in GGR and taxes, according to the KSA, is a direct result of the tax hike.

Licensed gambling companies in the Netherlands may offer sports betting as long as they follow the country's stringent betting rules. All licensed operators are expected to self-report any shortcomings to the KSA, according to the regulator.

As of the time of this writing, no penalty has been issued to TonyBet for the violation. However, the KSA's warning serves as a reminder to all operators to adhere strictly to the regulations to maintain a fair and secure gambling environment in the Netherlands.

  1. The Kansspelautoriteit (KSA) has issued a warning to TonyBet, a licensed operator, for offering sports betting on awards like the Ballon d'Or, which violate Dutch laws because they are not based on objective, verifiable performance within official sporting events.
  2. In addition to sports betting, there are other forms of gambling in casinos, such as casino-games and lotteries, which also need to comply with gambling-trends and regulations to ensure a fair and secure environment for players.
  3. Despite the increasing popularity of casino-and-gambling activities, including sports betting, the Dutch gambling regulator has expressed concerns over the impact of high taxes on gambling revenue and taxes, asserting that the recent tax hike has not increased but rather decreased these revenues.
