Sarasota Opera House celebrates a century of culture and revival in 2026
The Sarasota Opera House has been a cornerstone of downtown Sarasota for nearly a century. Originally built as the Edwards Theatre in 1926, it began as a vaudeville and movie palace before facing decline. After years of neglect, the venue was revived in 1984 and later underwent a major £16 million restoration in 2007.
The building first opened its doors in 1926 under the name Edwards Theatre. Over time, it changed hands and was renamed the Florida Theater, but eventually fell into disrepair. In 1984, the city repurchased the property and reopened it as the Sarasota Opera House.
The venue has since become a cultural hub, attracting audiences from all walks of life. Patrons arrive in everything from casual jeans to formal suits, reflecting its broad appeal. Morris (Marty) Hylton III, President of Architecture Sarasota, calls it one of the city's most iconic landmarks. The 2026 season will feature a mix of classic and contemporary works. Highlights include Carlisle Floyd's *Susannah*, starring Hanna Brammer, who has performed at the Opera House for ten years. The lineup also includes *La Boheme*, *The Merry Widow*, and *Il Trovatore*.
The Opera House continues to shape Sarasota's cultural identity and downtown vibrancy. Its diverse programming and historic charm draw both long-time supporters and new visitors. The 2026 season further cements its role as a key arts destination in the region.
