SAIC Motor Corporation's MG brand unveils a revamped MG4 model, featuring a semi-solid-state battery, and an entry-level price of $14,000.

In a significant move, MG Motor, a subsidiary of SAIC Motor, has launched the redesigned MG4 compact hatchback in China. The new MG4, initially named MG Mulan, was officially presented by MG (Morris Garages) on September 1, 2025.

The new MG4, now known as the MG4 EV in China, has made a strong impression with its competitive pricing and impressive features. With a starting guide price of RMB 68,800 ($9,650), the all-new MG4 is one of the most affordable EVs in the Chinese market.

The vehicle boasts a single motor delivering 120 kW peak power and 250 Nm peak torque, enabling a top speed of 160 km/h. The new MG4 is built on SAIC's E3 pure-electric architecture.

One of the standout features of the new MG4 is its semi-solid-state battery, developed by SAIC-backed startup QingTao Energy. This battery variant delivers a CLTC range of 537 kilometers, showcasing the vehicle's impressive range capabilities. The energy density of this battery is 180 Wh/kg.

In addition to the semi-solid-state battery variant, the new MG4 also offers variants with lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, available in capacities of 42.8 kWh and 53.9 kWh. The CLTC ranges for these LFP battery variants range between 437 km and 530 km.

The new MG4 has garnered significant attention, with 11,067 pre-orders in its first 24 hours. MG has also made a special offer for a variant of the updated MG4 equipped with a semi-solid-state battery pack, starting at RMB 102,800, discounted to RMB 99,800. Discounted prices for the MG4 start at RMB 65,800.

The new MG4 made its debut overseas under the MG4 Electric name at the time of its launch in China. The vehicle's dimensions are 4,395 mm in length, 1,842 mm in width, 1,551 mm in height, and a wheelbase of 2,750 mm.

While the new MG4 has made a strong impression in China, it faces stiff competition from other EV manufacturers. For instance, Nio's ET7 mid-to-large size sedan achieves over 1,000 kilometers of range with its semi-solid-state battery pack, boasting an energy density of 261 Wh/kg.

The new MG4 is set to shake up the Chinese EV market with its affordable pricing, impressive range, and cutting-edge technology. As the market continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how the new MG4 fares against its competitors.
