Saddened hearts in Saarland following the death of the slain police officer

On a sombre day in Saarlouis, an evangelical church played host to a memorial service for Police Officer Simon Bohr, who was tragically killed in the line of duty on August 21, 2022. The service, which was not open to the public but was broadcast from a media center, was attended by approximately 1,500 to 2,000 people, including Saarland's Minister President Anke Rehlinger and Interior Minister Reinhold Jost (both SPD).

The funeral procession, which stretched for about 1.6 kilometers through the city, included hundreds of uniformed police officers. White roses were held by many in the procession, and tears were often visible as they made their way to the church.

The service began with a trumpet solo of the Beatles' song "Yesterday," a poignant choice that resonated with the mourners. Reverend Jörg Beckers, who led the service, described the officer's farewell as "incomprehensible, disruptive, horrifying, and infinitely sad." He went on to remember Simon Bohr as an incredibly positive person, professional, reliable, and approachable.

Police chaplain Hubertus Kesselheim added that Simon Bohr was selfless, advocating for everyone, and never speaking ill of others. He was a shining example of a public servant, dedicated to his duty and his community.

The state of Saarland is planning a central memorial service for fallen police officer Simon Bohr on Friday in Saarbrücken. The state prosecutor's office is investigating the case, including for murder. Simon Bohr, who was 34 years old, left behind a wife and two children.

During the service, Simon Bohr's widow addressed the mourners, but her words were not made public. Pastor Beckers stated that it's now time to let go, as Simon Bohr will be missed. Police President Thorsten Weiler stated that the Saarland police is experiencing one of its darkest hours.

The person killed on August 21, 2022, in Völklingen during an attempted arrest was Police Officer Simon B., who was shot by an 18-year-old suspect after a robbery. A painted heart image was placed in front of a podium with a photo of the police officer in the sanctuary.

As the memorial service came to a close, the mourners dispersed, each carrying with them a heavy heart and a renewed appreciation for the sacrifices made by our brave police officers. Simon Bohr's memory will live on, not just in the hearts of those who knew him, but in the work of the Saarland police as they continue to serve and protect their community.
