S&P 500 Enters Blockchain as Tokenized Fund Launches on Base

The S&P 500 index has entered the blockchain through deSPXA, a tokenized fund launched on Base in June 2024. This move marks the first time a major index is available as a real-world asset (RWA) on a public blockchain, opening new doors for decentralised finance (DeFi) integration. The deSPXA fund was developed under licence from S&P Dow Jones Indices and is managed by Janus Henderson. Centrifuge's V3 infrastructure powers the token, while Chronicle supplies real-time pricing data. Non-US users can now access 24/7 exposure to the S&P 500, with minting and redemption at net asset value—just like traditional ETFs.

Holders of deSPXA gain immediate access to DeFi platforms. They can borrow against their holdings on Morpho, short the asset on Euler, trade it on Aerodrome and Definitive, or earn yields via Multipli RWAusd. This integration is made possible by the deRWA framework, which connects tokenized assets with DeFi protocols across different networks. Meanwhile, Valinor secured $25 million in seed funding, led by Castle Island Ventures, to develop blockchain-native credit markets. The round attracted support from prominent crypto and fintech investors. Their project, Open Credit, aims to streamline lending and borrowing within decentralised ecosystems, expanding access for both parties. Since deSPXA's launch, no other institutional asset managers or traditional financial firms have publicly introduced similar tokenized RWAs on public blockchains.

The arrival of deSPXA on Base provides non-US investors with round-the-clock access to the S&P 500 through DeFi. Its compatibility with lending, trading, and yield platforms highlights the growing link between traditional finance and blockchain. Valinor's funding further signals increasing interest in blockchain-based credit solutions.
