Russian portrayal of territorial advances claimed may excessively magnify facts, asserts International Security Working Group
In the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, several significant developments have taken place.
The Lithuanian military is bolstering security at unused roads along the border control points with Russia and Belarus by installing obstacles. This move is aimed at enhancing security and protecting against potential threats.
News reports suggest that Germany and Denmark were also involved in the installation of "Dragon's Teeth" along the borders of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, to enhance security near Russia.
Meanwhile, the situation in Ukraine remains dire. Russian troops continue to deliberately target and kill Ukrainian civilians, a fact disputed by analysts at the Institute for the Study of War (ISW). The ISW has also challenged Russian Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov's claims of territorial gains, estimating that only about 2,346 square kilometers of territory and 130 settlements have been captured since March, significantly less than Gerasimov's reported figures.
Russian forces have been surrounded by Ukrainian forces near Dobropillia in the Donetsk region, marking a potential setback for the Russian military. However, Russia is reportedly suffering significant personnel losses during the war.
In a bid to support Ukraine, the European Union is exploring how frozen Russian assets could be used to finance Ukraine's defense and reconstruction after the war. The British "Telegraph" has also reported that the USA could support a European engagement, at least with private US military firms, to deter Russia from a renewed attack on Ukraine.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held consultations with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky ahead of his meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin in China. Despite this, Ukrainian forces have successfully prevented Russian troops from capturing targets in the Donetsk region and halted further advances into the Dnipropetrovsk region.
Amidst the chaos, there are glimmers of hope. The region of Cherson is receiving three powerful generators worth a total of around one million dollars from supporters in the USA. One of these generators is intended to ensure the operation of a hospital, while the other two are to be used in connection with the heating supply of the population.
However, the war continues to take a heavy toll on civilians. Ukrainian air defenses intercepted 537 drones and 45 missiles overnight, resulting in civilian casualties in Saporischschja, with one person killed and at least 30 injured.
As the world watches, Russian President Vladimir Putin has arrived in the People's Republic of China for a multi-day visit, adding another layer of complexity to the geopolitical landscape. The future of Ukraine and the ongoing conflict remain uncertain, but the international community continues to show support and solidarity with the country.
