Russia and North Korea's Alliance Deepens With War Art and Troop Deployments
Russia and North Korea have deepened their military and political ties since 2022, with arms deals, troop deployments, and cultural exchanges. A new exhibition in Moscow now showcases artworks celebrating this growing partnership—including scenes of North Korean soldiers fighting alongside Russian forces in Ukraine.
The display comes as direct flights between Moscow and Pyongyang resume and Russian tourists visit North Korean resorts for the first time in years.
The alliance between the two nations began in summer 2022, when Russia started receiving artillery ammunition from Pyongyang. By mid-2023, deliveries expanded to include ballistic missiles, such as the KN-23. Since October 2024, over 20,000 North Korean soldiers have been sent to Ukraine in four separate deployments, supported by established logistics networks.
A June 2024 summit between Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong-un formalised the partnership at the highest government level. Putin later publicly acknowledged the role of North Korean troops in Ukraine, marking a rare official recognition of their involvement.
In Moscow, the Museum of Decorative Arts now features an exhibition of North Korean artworks. Paintings in the socialist realist style depict scenes like For a Brother-in-Arms and Camaraderie in Battle, showing North Korean and Russian soldiers fighting side by side. Other pieces include a giant photo of Kim and Putin shaking hands, a nighttime panorama of Pyongyang, and portraits of the North Korean leader. Even kimchi, the traditional Korean dish, is highlighted as part of the cultural exchange.
Beyond the museum, a North Korean restaurant in Moscow has become popular among locals. Meanwhile, direct flights between the two capitals have restarted, and Russian tourists are visiting North Korea's Wonsan-Kalma beach resort. Two Russian visitors at the exhibition described the alliance as a temporary measure, tied only to the ongoing war in Ukraine.
The strengthened ties between Russia and North Korea now span military cooperation, economic exchanges, and cultural promotion. With troop deployments, arms transfers, and renewed travel links, the partnership shows no signs of slowing.
The Moscow exhibition, featuring battlefield art and political imagery, underscores how deeply the two nations have aligned—both in war and in public messaging.
