Sydney Marathon Breaks Records with Impressive Performances

The Sydney Marathon made its debut as a world major on Sunday, and it did not disappoint. The event witnessed record-breaking victories in both the men's and women's races.

In the women's race, Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands shattered Workenesh Edesa's record time from last year, crossing the finish line in an incredible 2:18:22. This time not only broke Edesa's record but also established a new standard for the Sydney Marathon.

Hassan's victory was not the only record-breaking performance of the day. In the men's race, Hailemaryam Kiros of Ethiopia set a new record, finishing the race in an impressive time. Kiros' victory marked the debut of the Sydney Marathon, making his win even more noteworthy.

The men's wheelchair event also saw a new record being set. Marcel Hug, a seasoned athlete with seven Paralympic gold medals and 23 other major marathon victories, smashed the Sydney record previously held by Canada's Josh Cassidy from 2024. Hug's winning time was 1:27:15.

Unfortunately, the search results do not provide information about a female athlete winning the men's wheelchair race or her finishing time.

Eliud Kipchoge, the headline attraction in the men's field, had a disappointing race. He fell off the lead pack with 10 kilometers to go and couldn't find his way back into the contention. Kipchoge finished ninth in the Sydney Marathon, more than two minutes behind the winner.

Despite Kipchoge's performance, the thousands of fans along the finish-line enclosure enthusiastically cheered him on, warmly embracing him as he crossed the finish line.

In addition to Hassan and Kiros, other notable finishers included Brigid Kosgei, who finished third in the women's race with a time of 2:22:05.

The Sydney Marathon was a successful event, marking a promising start for its new status as a world major. With such impressive performances, it's clear that the Sydney Marathon is set to become a significant event in the marathon calendar.
