Subhead: The retired Royal Navy officer, husband of Princess Anne, receives the highest honour within the Royal Victorian Order
In a significant recognition of his service to the royal family, Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence has been appointed Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order (GCVO) by Queen Elizabeth II. This prestigious honour, the highest available within the Order, is bestowed upon individuals who have provided exceptional personal service to the monarch or the royal family.
Laurence, who met Princess Anne when he served as an equerry to Queen Elizabeth II, has been a constant presence by Anne's side at royal events over the years. The couple, who married in 1992 at Crathie Kirk, the local church the royals normally frequent when in residence at Balmoral, have appeared together in various events such as the French state dinner and Trooping the Colour.
The ceremony taking place at Balmoral Castle, the royal family's official residence in the Scottish Highlands, marked a significant milestone in Laurence's career. It's worth noting that he was previously a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order.
In advance of Queen Elizabeth's annual birthday celebration, Trooping the Colour, Buckingham Palace announced that only working royals would appear on the balcony, with exceptions including Laurence. This year, he was one of the exceptions to appear on the balcony during Trooping the Colour.
Meanwhile, Princess Anne, who recently celebrated her 75th birthday, sustained a traumatic head injury in 2024. Despite this setback, she has been frequently accompanied by Laurence in public engagements since her injury.
The specific details of her injury were not mentioned, but it has not deterred her from her royal duties. In fact, she was seen with Laurence at VE Day Celebrations earlier this year.
With this new title, Laurence now stands on par with Queen Camilla, the Duchess of Edinburgh, and the Princess of Wales, further solidifying his role within the royal family. Laurence has truly become a fixture by Anne's side, and their strong bond continues to be a testament to their shared commitment to service.
