Roman artifacts from the era of the Romans uncovered at the historical site of Histria in Romania by archaeologists
Historic Discovery Unearthed at Ancient Site of Histria
The National Museum of History of Romania (MNIR) has made a significant archaeological discovery at the ancient site of Histria. The latest find, made in the ongoing excavations led by Dinko Radić and Preston Miracle since 2007, sheds new light on daily life in the city during the Roman era.
The MNIR research team, in collaboration with national and regional institutions, has been uncovering artifacts spanning from the late Hellenistic era to the early Byzantine period at Histria. The latest discovery, made in the "Great Gate - Great Tower" sector, is one of the most important in recent decades, according to museum officials.
The remains of a Roman house destroyed by fire between the mid-2nd and mid-3rd centuries AD were discovered, containing a hoard of more than 40 coins and several precious-metal ornaments. The items were fused together in their original shape due to the fire.
Officials believe the valuables found in the hoard will be classified as "Treasure" under Romania's cultural heritage law. The valuables had been stored in a wooden chest, which burned during the blaze.
The remains of the building indicate it was once a luxurious home belonging to a wealthy family of the Roman Principate. Archaeologists recovered numerous other artifacts, including inscriptions, ceramics, bronze, iron, glass, and stone objects.
The discovery provides a vivid glimpse into the prosperity (and sudden tragedies) of Roman Histria. The items, now transferred to the museum's restoration laboratory for conservation work, will be exhibited to the public once they are fully restored.
Excavations at the Histria site have been ongoing since 1914, coordinated by the "Vasile Pârvan" Institute of Archaeology in Bucharest. The MNIR research team has been active in Histria since 2000 and has discovered streets, water infrastructure, large public and private buildings, and a wide range of artifacts.
The photos of the discovery are sourced from the museum. The discovery at Histria is a testament to the rich history and cultural significance of the ancient site, offering insights into the lives of the people who once called it home.
