Riders in Latvia encouraged to practice safe and responsible riding habits
As the motorcycle season kicks off in Latvia, traffic safety expert Oskars Irbītis has shared some valuable tips to help riders stay safe on the roads.
Irbītis emphasised the importance of observing one's surroundings and details, stating that it is a vital skill for motorcyclists. This attentiveness can help save lives by allowing riders to anticipate potential hazards and react accordingly.
One of the biggest risks for motorcycle accidents comes from those who ride adventure motorcycles. To minimise this risk, Irbītis advised that riders should be aware of the mechanics of riding adventure motorcycles, especially for new generation models, as they may have slightly different handling characteristics.
City and highway riders have accumulated more skill compared to those who ride adventure motorcycles. However, this does not mean that adventure riders should not invest in training before the season or at the beginning. According to Irbītis, riders who have undergone training are less likely to get into accidents.
In recent years, KTM motorcycles have caused the most accidents involving Enduro or Adventure-type motorcycles in Latvia. While it's not possible to eliminate all risks, riders can take steps to minimise them. For instance, riders should be prepared to adjust their speed or position when encountering adverse weather conditions or large vehicles.
From a weather perspective, motorcyclists should dress properly and be prepared to adjust their speed or position when encountering adverse conditions, such as a big truck spraying mud and rainwater. Irbītis also emphasised the importance of considering changing weather and road conditions before setting off on a motorcycle.
The behavior of other road users is crucial in motorcycling. Motorcyclists should be aware that other road users may have forgotten about motorcycles after the long winter, requiring special caution. Irbītis gave an example of the importance of observing details by noting that motorcyclists should be aware of other road users with fogged-up windows, as they may not be able to see the motorcyclist.
Latvia's roads are regularly ranked among the most dangerous in the European Union, not just for motorcyclists. To improve safety, Irbītis stressed the importance of proper dress and awareness of road conditions, as well as the behaviour of other road users.
On new generation motorcycles, failing to switch modes can cause the ABS to remain in asphalt mode, affecting braking on dirt roads. When leaving asphalt, motorcyclists need to switch modes to ensure the ABS, shock absorbers, and traction mechanics work effectively for off-road conditions.
These tips, shared by traffic safety expert Oskars Irbītis, aim to help motorcyclists stay safe on the roads this season. By being aware, well-prepared, and attentive, riders can reduce their risk of accidents and enjoy a safer, more enjoyable riding experience.
