In the heart of Solingen, a city renowned for its skilled trades, a new apprentice is joining the ranks of Netze Solingen. André Kesper, a resident of Leverkusen, will begin his apprenticeship as an Installation Mechanic for Pipe Systems Technology on August 15.

Kesper's decision to start over in the skilled trades was driven by a desire to make a real contribution, especially during the energy transition. After a successful career as a real estate agent, Kesper sought a future-proof job where his skills would be needed to modernize buildings and support the energy transition.

Teamwork is highly valued at Netze Solingen, and everyone supports each other without competing against one another. Kesper is looking forward to being part of this collaborative environment, working alongside his new colleagues to make a difference.

Jennifer Gerhardt, the training manager at Netze Solingen, emphasizes that older apprentices with professional experience are no longer an exception in the energy sector. The sector is future-proof and requires many qualified specialists to implement the local energy transition.

Despite a high demand for personnel, the requirements for applicants remain high. Basic knowledge in mathematics, German, and English are tested, and additional knowledge in physics or technical understanding is required depending on the training occupation. Unfortunately, more than 50 percent of applicants do not pass the aptitude test due to a lack of basic knowledge.

Kesper became aware of Netze Solingen through the social media channels of Stadtwerke Solingen. His first day at the company was a key moment for him, as he felt welcomed immediately and recognized. Kevin Lis, the group leader for network assembly at Netze Solingen, has expressed his initial skepticism about Kesper but has since been impressed by Kesper's general knowledge, attitude, and willingness to learn new things.

Kesper's family found his switch to the skilled trades surprising and not without skepticism, as he had already gained financial security as a real estate agent. However, Kesper sees many young people today as lacking the motivation to find solutions independently, and considers himself different due to his life experience. His goal is to successfully complete the three-and-a-half-year apprenticeship and acquire further qualifications.

Many jobs with a future are being created in the skilled trades sector during the energy transition. Kesper is excited to be a part of this movement, contributing to the energy transition with Netze Solingen and making a real difference in his community.
