Retail giant Boohoo mulls over divestment of fashion brand PrettyLittleThing amidst 2024 financial loss of £264 million
The Debenhams Group, formerly known as Boohoo, has announced a significant shift in its strategy following a 17% decline in its 2024 turnover, down to £1.217,9 million. The British fashion distribution group is now exploring various avenues to revitalise its operations, including the potential sale of its popular brand, PrettyLittleThing.
CEO Dan Finley revealed that the company is undergoing a global review, aiming to reposition and adjust brands targeted at young audiences. Finley emphasised the need for change after "a prolonged period of unacceptable low performance". The review's primary focus is on profitability and cash generation under Debenhams Group's new leadership.
One of the key aspects of the restructuring strategy involves the potential sale of the PrettyLittleThing brand segment. This move comes as part of the company's efforts to streamline its operations and focus on core businesses.
In addition to the potential sale, Debenhams Group is also evaluating the restructuring of its distribution center in Burnley (UK) and its logistics centers in the United States. These changes are intended to optimise the company's operations and reduce costs.
Despite the challenging financial results, Debenhams Group managed to achieve estimated annual savings of £50 million after reducing its workforce by 30%. The company's EBITDA for 2024 was £41.6 million, representing a 5.3% margin.
Excluding the PrettyLittleThing business, the drop in Debenhams Group's turnover would have been 12%, with the revenue for the year falling to £790.3 million. Losses before taxes for the year increased to £263.9 million, compared to £146.4 million in the previous year.
The Debenhams Group's restructuring strategy also includes a review of its operations in Burnley and the United States. The goal is to improve efficiency and reduce costs, which will help the company to navigate the challenging retail landscape and position itself for future growth.
