Residents in Hong Kong return to their jobs as regular public services are resumed following a 13-hour closure under the T8 suspension, recounting the live events.
The Hong Kong Observatory issued the T3 typhoon warning signal at 2:40 AM on Sunday, as Severe Tropical Storm Tapah approached the city. By Monday at 1:00 AM, the Observatory raised the signal to No 3, following Tapah's departure from the city.
The storm did not deter race fans, as HK$1.3 billion was exchanged hands on the opening day of the races. However, the impact of Tapah on the city was not immediately clear, with no specific information provided by the Hong Kong Observatory.
All day school classes on Monday were cancelled, as a precautionary measure. Workers gradually returned to their jobs, and public transport services resumed their normal schedules.
The Hong Kong Observatory had previously raised the No 8 warning for Tapah, indicating that the storm was approaching the city. Tapah, a Malay word for a type of giant freshwater catfish, made landfall and moved away from the city.
Forecasters predict that up to 5 more typhoons may approach Hong Kong by the end of 2025. The Hong Kong Observatory is set to issue the T8 signal at 9:20 PM on Monday, indicating a super typhoon is approaching the city.
As always, residents are advised to stay informed and follow the advice of the Hong Kong Observatory and other authorities during severe weather events. Stay safe, Hong Kong!
