Avis Introduces Contactless Car Rental Service in New Zealand

From August 18, the service will be available at Napier, Tauranga, and Dunedin. New Plymouth will follow suit from September 1, and Queenstown will join the list from September 8. The service is already available at Avis's airports in Auckland, Hamilton, Palmerston North, Rotorua, Wellington (including Wellington city), Nelson, Picton, Blenheim, Christchurch, and Invercargill.

Enterprise, another major player in New Zealand's mainstream car rental industry, was the first to introduce contactless pickup, and this service is currently offered at their locations including airports.

With the Straight-to-Car service, customers can go straight to the car they have chosen and start their rental without interacting with rental counter staff. The car selection can be swapped instantly via the Avis App, and the new selection updates immediately.

The cars synch with the customer's cellphone for unlocking, locking, and starting, a technology similar to that used by car-sharing services for years. This means customers can unlock their chosen vehicle using their cellphone through the Avis App.

Avis Preferred membership is free to join, and this service is available to both local and international Avis Preferred members. The company claims that this marks a New Zealand-first in the mainstream rental-car industry.

Joining Avis Preferred gives customers access to this contactless car rental service, as well as other benefits such as priority service, exclusive offers, and faster service at the rental counter.
