Giorgio Armani, the influential Italian fashion designer known for his minimalist-elegant style and androgynous silhouettes, passed away at the age of 91. The news of his death was announced by his company on Thursday.

Born in Piacenza in 1934, Armani began his career in fashion after studying medicine at the University of Milan and working as a window dresser in Milan. Before founding his own fashion company, he honed his skills in various roles within the industry.

Armani is credited with inventing the "deconstructed look" in fashion, characterized by unstructured suits that eschewed excessive padding. His first collection, "Armani Borgonuovo 21", was a huge success, particularly for his lightweight, unstructured women's jackets inspired by men's clothing.

As one of the few independent star designers, Armani's work extended beyond fashion, influencing various aspects of life. His company expanded with sub-lines like Emporio Armani, Armani Jeans, Armani PrivΓ© (Couture), and Armani Exchange.

Armani's work was characterized by extraordinary clarity, precision, insatiable curiosity, attention to the present, and a focus on people. His minimalist-elegant style and androgynous silhouettes became a symbol of modern sophistication and the most popular brand on red carpets.

Giorgio Armani was the founder, creator, and mentor of the Armani Group, which he founded in 1975 alongside Sergio Galeotti. His successor in leading the Armani Group is to be a gradual transition involving several key family members and close associates, including his nieces Silvana and Roberta, his sister Rosanna, her son Andrea Camerana, and his right-hand man Leo Dell'Orco, who has been managing menswear and took over some duties during Armani's illness.

The funeral and memorial service for Armani will be held privately, as per his express wish. Mourners can pay their respects from 9 am to 6 pm during this period. Armani's company was often considered a family, leaving a tangible void with his passing.

Giorgio Armani will lie in state in Milan on September 6 and 7 at Via Bergognone 59 near the Armani headquarters. His legacy will continue to inspire and influence the fashion industry for years to come.
