Celebrating the Life and Music of Itzhak Perlman

As the renowned violinist Itzhak Perlman turns 80 on August 31st, we take a look back at his illustrious career and the advice he shares with his students.

Born in 1945 in Jaffa, Israel, Perlman's journey in music began after he contracted polio at the age of four, leaving him dependent on walking aids and able to play only while seated. Despite these challenges, Perlman's talent and determination shone through, leading him to become one of the great violin virtuosos of our time.

Perlman's Stradivari instrument, which he has been playing since 1976, was once owned by his late colleague Yehudi Menuhin. This instrument, along with his dedication and passion, has allowed Perlman to captivate audiences worldwide.

Throughout his career, Perlman has ventured beyond the boundaries of classical music, incorporating jazz and Klezmer into his repertoire. He is perhaps best known for his performance of the theme music from 'Schindler's List', a film about a businessman named Oskar Schindler who saved hundreds of Jews from Nazi concentration camps. This piece is the one most frequently requested of Perlman.

In addition to the 'Schindler's List' soundtrack, Perlman has appeared on 'Sesame Street', played the US national anthem, and performed 'We Didn't Start the Fire' with Billy Joel. He has also collaborated with renowned symphony orchestras worldwide, including the Vienna Philharmonic and the Berlin Philharmonic, and has performed with Plรกcido Domingo, Yo-Yo Ma, and many others.

Perlman's advice to his students is to "never get bored" with their music, even if they play a piece multiple times. He encourages them to practice four to five hours a day with a ten-minute break every hour. This dedication has undoubtedly contributed to his success.

Together with his wife Toby, Perlman runs a summer school for young musicians on Shelter Island near New York City. In addition to his performance schedule, which is already booked well into next year, Perlman and his family have remained close, with five children and a marriage that has spanned over five decades.

Conductor Daniel Barenboim has commented on Perlman's courage in accepting his disability, stating that it is his "greatest strength". As we celebrate Perlman's 80th birthday, we are reminded of the power of determination, talent, and the love of music.

Perlman's legacy will continue to inspire musicians for generations to come. Here's to many more years of beautiful music from this incredible artist.
