In the heart of Calcutta's bustling slums, Isabel, a dedicated woman running an orphanage, receives an unexpected call that sets her on a journey across the globe. The potential donor is none other than Theresa Young, a multi-millionaire media mogul based in New York.

This journey forms the core of the human drama, "After the Wedding," directed by Bart Freundlich. The film, a compelling exploration of relationships, human frailty, and what makes a "good" father, marks Freundlich's first foray into the production of this particular film.

Isabel's story intertwines with that of Theresa, revealing a shared depth that upends their lives. The film's cast includes Michelle Williams as Isabel, Julianne Moore as Theresa, Abby Quinn as Grace, and Billy Crudup in a role that particularly interested him due to the film's exploration of fatherhood.

Crudup, who has previously worked with Williams on two films, found the creative exploration of personal interactions between friends during filming to be a natural process. Williams, moved by Isabel's unwavering loyalty to the children of the orphanage, even offered to work in a similar environment before shooting began.

Moore, who is married to Freundlich, was an early supporter of Quinn's casting as Grace. Quinn built a strong relationship with Moore and Freundlich before filming, which undoubtedly helped her portray Grace effectively.

The film is an adaptation of Danish filmmaker Susanne Bier's Academy Award-nominated film. Producer Joel B. Michaels pursued the rights to the film for several years before finding the right director in Freundlich. With Moore on board, it became easier to sign the rest of the cast.

Freundlich agreed with Michaels that having the leads played by two women would make the story more current and provided a unique opportunity to tell a story about the choices and consequences faced by women.

Theresa, along with her artist husband, Oscar Carlson, 21-year-old daughter, Grace, and eight-year-old twins, Theo and Otto, form an intriguing part of the narrative. The film promises to be a thought-provoking exploration of human relationships, one that will undoubtedly resonate with audiences.
