In July 2024, a 51-year-old German man met a tragic end while trying to help his son during a swimming incident near Dorio, on the eastern shore of Lake Como. The man was renting a boat at the time, and according to reports, he jumped into the water to save his son. However, the strong waves generated by changing winds, a common occurrence in the northern part of the lake, swept him away. Despite a search and rescue effort, his body was found more than 200 meters deep, approximately 220 meters below the lake's surface.
