In a tragic incident, a 55-year-old German man was discovered dead in Lake Como, Italy, on Monday. The body was found at a depth of approximately 220 meters, according to the judicial authorities.

The man, who hailed from the Baden-Württemberg town of Bühl, had Italian roots and was a restaurateur and organizer of after-work parties in the region. The incident occurred near Dorio on the eastern shore of Lake Como, a popular spot among German tourists.

The tragic event bears a striking resemblance to a similar tragedy in July 2024, where another German man drowned while trying to save his son in the same lake. That incident also occurred near Dorio.

The man's children had reportedly fallen overboard, and he jumped into the water to save them. However, it is suspected that he was swept away by a current and did not resurface. The children were brought to safety.

The search for the man was hindered by adverse weather conditions and the fact that Lake Como is very deep at the point where the incident occurred, complicating the search. The northern part of Lake Como is prone to strong waves due to changeable winds, further adding to the difficulty of the search.

Mayor Hubert Schnurr described the incident as a "huge shock" for the city and the region. The forensic medical examination of the deceased falls under the jurisdiction of the local Italian authorities, specifically the Italian forensic police and forensic medicine departments responsible at the location of discovery. Coordination with German consular services may also occur if the deceased is a German citizen.

Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the man during this difficult time. Lake Como, one of the deepest lakes in Europe, has claimed another life, serving as a reminder of the dangers that can lurk even in the most picturesque of settings.
