Regional Focus on Underground Trade: Pig Fur Customs in the Hairdressing and Beauty Industry - Investigation of Barbershops and Nail Care Services
The Schweinfurt Customs Office recently conducted a regional special audit to combat tax evasion and illegal employment in the hairdressing and cosmetics industry. The audit, led by the Schweinfurt Customs Authority itself, was a preventive measure aimed at reducing the social acceptance of such practices.
Over the course of the audit, which spanned across Lower Franconia and large parts of Upper Franconia, 79 businesses were inspected, 166 surveyed individuals were questioned, and 17 investigations were initiated on-site. Indications of potential violations were found in 42 cases, including suspected withholding and embezzlement of wages in nine cases, improper receipt of state social benefits in one case, and evidence of non-payment of the statutory minimum wage of 12.82 euros in eight cases.
Suspicion of illegal employment of foreign workers was found in eight cases. Numerous deficiencies regarding mandatory notification and recording obligations were identified by the customs officials in the businesses.
The Financial Control Schwarzarbeit of the Customs Administration conducts both nationwide and regional focus audits to maintain a high number of audits in certain sectors. The audits are risk-oriented, with both spot checks and full audits of all employees of an employer.
