RVV Introduces Cashless Ticket Purchases on Selected Buses

Starting from September 3rd, ÖBB will begin the test phase of digital card payment systems for buses in the RVV network. This move aims to streamline the ticketing process and improve efficiency.

Passengers can now purchase their tickets via the RVV app, at ticket machines at central stops, known advance sales points (approximately 30 in the city area), the RVV customer center on Hemauer Street, or directly on the bus using credit/debit cards, Google/Apple Pay, or prepaid cards (available from autumn at advance sales points and the RVV customer center).

Cashless ticket purchases offer several advantages. They save time compared to purchasing from drivers, and they allow passengers to select and pay for tickets directly on the bus. This change also enables bus drivers to better focus on passenger boarding and alighting, improving the overall travel experience.

The test phase will involve 12 buses equipped with cashless ticket terminals. During a ticket inspection, passengers can hold their payment method up to the controller's reading device. Previously purchased tickets and completed trips can be viewed at rvv.de/bargeldlos.

If traveling up to three stops (short distance fare), the digital ticket costs only 1.44 euros. A single ticket in price category 1 costs 2.88 euros digitally at the new ticket terminal on the bus or via the RVV app.

By late autumn, the entire municipal bus fleet of das Stadtwerk Mobilitaet will be equipped with the new cashless ticket terminals. This transition to digital ticketing is part of RVV's commitment to modernising its services and improving the travel experience for its passengers.

Stickers on the entrance doors of the test buses indicate that tickets can only be purchased cashless. Ticket purchases from drivers will not be possible in these 12 test buses. The test phase will be used to constantly test and evaluate the processes and functionality of the digital ticket devices and the new on-board computer system.

For those who prefer cash, RVV tickets can still be purchased with cash in regional buses. However, it is encouraged to transition to digital ticketing for a smoother and faster travel experience.
