Refurbished Sheerr Pool creates a wave at Pottruck Center

The Sheerr Pool, located within the Pottruck Center at the University of Pennsylvania, has reopened its doors this summer following a comprehensive renovation that took place over the past year. First opened in 1967, this pool has undergone significant changes to improve the swimming experience for all users.

One of the key features of the renovation is the installation of a new gutter system. Designed to allow chlorine fumes to dissipate more easily, this system brings the water level flush with the pool deck, eliminating the 11-inch drop-off that was previously present. This change should make the pool safer for users and easier for lifeguards to do saves, as it eliminates the potential hazard of a deep gutter.

The new gutter system is not the only improvement made to the pool. A zero-depth entry system has been installed, along with new diving boards and starting blocks. The pool programming at the Sheerr Pool includes swim lessons and other activities, ensuring there's something for everyone.

In addition to the pool improvements, new seating has been added to the pool area, and an ADA-compliant viewing platform has been installed, making the facility more accessible for all. The renovation has also added a full glass entry wall and door, giving the pool a modern and inviting look.

The filtration and ventilation system has been upgraded to ensure the water is clean and the air is fresh. The pool lighting has been upgraded as well, with the new system located outside of the pool footprint, over the decks, shining up towards the ceiling. This lighting system is more serviceable, energy efficient, and can be adjusted or dimmed when the pool is not in use.

Noah Gustkey, the associate athletic director/senior director of facilities at Penn Athletics, played a significant role in the renovation of the Sheerr Pool. The idea to renovate the pool came from the University of Pennsylvania itself, as they sought to provide a modern and safe swimming facility for students and the local community.

During the renovation, Penn Athletics faced challenges finding alternative facilities while the Sheerr Pool was under construction. However, these challenges have been overcome, and swim lessons will resume at the Sheerr Pool during the fall semester.

The Sheerr Pool at the Pottruck Center is now open, offering a free-flowing pool design that is safer, more accessible, and more inviting than ever before. Whether you're looking to learn to swim, improve your technique, or simply enjoy a refreshing dip, the Sheerr Pool is the perfect place to do so.
