Refining the Desktop Experience in Linux Mint 22.2, with Kernel Updates Stealing the Show

Linux Mint, a popular Linux distribution, has announced the release of its latest point update, Linux Mint 22.2, codenamed "Zara." Developed by the Linux Mint development team, this new version is based on Ubuntu 24.04.3 LTS, also known as "Noble Numbat."

Key Features of Linux Mint 22.2

The new version of Linux Mint 22.2 features an updated Cinnamon desktop, which, while not radically different, provides a fresh look and improved functionality. The Software Manager has had a facelift, better distinguishing native apps from Flatpak packages. The sticky notes app now sports rounded corners and works seamlessly on Wayland.

The themes in this release are slightly bluer, and the Update Manager now displays a "Reboot" button if any updates require a restart. Linux Mint 22.2 also includes updated graphics drivers associated with 24.10 and 25.04.

Availability and Upgrades

Linux Mint 22.2 is available now and offers an automatic upgrade from Mint 22.1. Mint Edge editions have been rolled into the normal point releases of Mint 22. However, there will not be a version for x86-32 machines in LMDE 7.

For the first time, Linux Mint 22.2 adopts Ubuntu's Hardware Enablement Updates, ensuring better compatibility with modern hardware. The distribution comes with kernel 6.14.

What's Next?

The next expected update will be Mint 22.3, based on Ubuntu 24.04.4, and expected in February. Meanwhile, the next version of Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE 7) will be based on Debian 13 "Trixie" and will be codenamed "Gigi."

Stay tuned for more updates on Linux Mint and its exciting features. Happy Linux-ing!

In other news, the Android version of the sticky notes app in Mint 22.2, StyncyNotes, is now available. The Xfce desktop version remains Xfce 4.18 in Linux Mint 22.2, as it does in the latest Linux Lite version 7.6. Version 22.1 was released in January.
