Reducing expenses: decreasing numbers of individuals choosing supplemental insurance coverage

In a recent development, a growing number of individuals are opting for higher own risks in their healthcare insurance, as reported by Independer insurance expert Mirjam Prins to RTL Nieuws. This trend, while seemingly beneficial for those who choose it, is raising concerns among healthcare organisations due to its potential impact on the solidarity principle in healthcare and the possible avoidance of necessary care.

The figures indicate a national declining trend for additional insurance, such as dental care and physiotherapy. As of 2021, only 59% of people with higher own risks have additional insurance for these services, a significant drop from 70% in 2020. The situation is even more concerning when it comes to dental care, with only 30% of people who have chosen a higher own risk having dental care insurance, compared to 45% in the previous year.

The shift towards higher own risks is often seen as an attractive perk for healthy individuals, offering them savings of €15 to €20 per month on their premium. However, it's important to note that people who are ill do not have the option to choose a higher own risk. This could potentially lead to individuals avoiding necessary care due to increased costs, such as not visiting the dentist.

Tijmen Hendriksen, a spokesman for patients organization Patiëntenfederatie Nederland, considers this a "worrying development". He stated that one in five people avoids care, either by not seeing the doctor or not picking up prescribed medication. This avoidance of care by individuals may lead to higher costs in the long run.

The organization Patiëntenfederatie Nederland does not recommend choosing a higher own risk. They caution that while it may seem appealing to save on monthly premiums, the potential costs of hospitalization in case of an accident could be full and potentially overwhelming.

The insurance companies most affected by this trend include CZ, VGZ, and Zilveren Kruis, with the reduction frequencies varying around 15-25% depending on the exact year and product.

It's crucial to remember that basic healthcare premiums for next year are €158. While choosing a higher own risk may seem like a way to save, the potential costs of avoiding necessary care could outweigh these savings in the long run. It's always advisable to consult with healthcare professionals and organisations to make informed decisions about one's healthcare insurance.
