Recreational activities are not recommended on eight beaches located in Tijuana and Rosarito due to their unsuitable conditions.
In a recent monitoring exercise conducted between February and March 2024, the Federal Commission for Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) found that Tijuana and Playas de Rosarito have the highest levels of contamination among Mexico's beaches. The results were reported by La Jornada and Baja California Post.
The monitoring was carried out by the organization CESPAS, which measured the contamination levels of various beaches across Mexico. Tijuana and Rosarito beaches were found to be the most polluted, with Playa Blanca de Tijuana recording the highest contamination rate of 15,531 enterococci. Two beaches in Rosarito also pose risks to the population, with nom values of 263 and 319 out of 1000.
Other beaches in Ensenada and San Quintin also showed high contamination levels. Parque México, El Faro, and Cañada Azteca are among the highly polluted beaches in Mexico. Baja Malibu and San Antonio del Mar also have high levels of contamination, with 6,132 and 3,076 enterococci respectively.
As a result of the findings, Civil Protection has issued an alert advising against swimming in Tijuana, Rosarito, and Ensenada beaches. These beaches are considered not suitable for recreational use due to the risks they present to the population.
While these findings may cast a shadow over the region's tourism industry, it is important to note that there is a video available about Americans moving to Rosarito, Baja California to live their American dream. It is hoped that the authorities will take swift action to address the contamination issue and restore the beaches to their former glory.
In conclusion, the monitoring exercise has revealed that Tijuana and Playas de Rosarito have the highest levels of contamination among Mexico's beaches. The authorities have issued an alert advising against swimming in these beaches, and further action is needed to address the contamination issue.
