Recognition Bestowed Upon Distinguished Alumna and Three Generations of the Orange Family Lineage
Syracuse University has received a generous donation from William Pelton, an alumnus of the Maxwell School, to establish the Barringer Pelton Public Service Graduate Scholarship. This scholarship aims to provide financial support to graduate students interested in careers in local, state, and federal government.
The scholarship is named after Pelton's mentor, Judith Barringer, who had a distinguished career in the federal government. Barringer advised four U.S. presidents and played a key role in the response to the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster. Before joining the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), Barringer worked for the U.S. Department of Energy. At OMB, she led program management and resource allocation for hazardous waste cleanup and emergency response programs, and mediated interagency disputes. Health issues led to Barringing's early retirement in 2024.
The scholarship is also a tribute to their niece, Jody Barringer '95, L'98, G'08, who earned a master of public administration (M.P.A.) from the Maxwell School in 2008. The scholarship will be available to students in both the College of Law and the College of Arts and Sciences (A&S).
Pelton's philanthropic gifts to Syracuse University are not limited to the Barringer Pelton Public Service Graduate Scholarship. In 2019, he made a gift to A&S in honour of the school's longtime dean, Eric Faigle, whose wife, Lucy (Pelton) Faigle 1924, was a distant cousin of Pelton's paternal grandmother.
Pelton's connection to Syracuse University goes back to his undergraduate days, where he studied physics and received his bachelor's degree in 1963. He later returned to Syracuse University to earn his law degree in 1966. Pelton's uncle and aunt, William Pelton '63, G'66 and Mary Jane Massie, provided financial support for his education during his undergraduate years.
In 2022, Barringer moved to the Environmental Protection Agency as a senior executive in the Office of Resource Conservation and Recovery. The Barringer Pelton Public Service Graduate Scholarship is a fitting tribute to the legacy of Judith Barringer and a testament to William Pelton's commitment to public service and education.
